European candidate of “Die LINKE” party Carola Rackete calls for an economic system without growth
Carola Rackete, the lead candidate of the Left Party for the European elections, is calling for a revolutionary economic system. Rackete told the Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ) on Tuesday that it is clear from science that ecological problems cannot be solved in a capitalist system. She justified her opinion by stating that infinite economic growth is not possible, as there is a finite planet.
The 35-year-old climate and refugee activist Rackete is in second place on the federal list of the Left Party for the European elections, making her part of the party’s four-member top team. In the SZ, she supported an economic system that does not enable growth. The Left Party candidate emphasized that this is essential. The Greens are not calling for an ecological restructuring of the economy, as green technologies also consume more and more resources.
Rackete explained in an interview that her reason for entering politics is that she wants to counter the general shift to the right in Europe and the crisis of the Left Party in Germany. She expressed the assumption that she would not have chosen this institutional path if the Left Party was doing fantastically well. However, she expressed a positive attitude. There has been a “real change” in the party since the separation of the Sahra Wagenknecht camp from the Left.
